GS1 Application Identifier database
Every GS1 code - GS1-128, GS1 DataMatrix, GS1 QR, GS1 DataBar - carries the same thing: a list of application identifiers and their values. This is the full catalogue: what each identifier means, which data type and length it takes, whether it carries a check digit, and whether it needs a separator. Data type, length and format come from the GS1 Barcode Syntax Dictionary; the descriptions are ours.
| AI | Name | Data type | Length | What it is |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| (00) | SSCC check digit | Numeric | 18 <GS> | Serial Shipping Container Code - the unique number of a logistics unit (pallet, carton, roll cage). It is what a shipping label is built around and what carriers and warehouses scan to track the unit. |
| (01) | GTIN check digit DL key | Numeric | 14 <GS> | Global Trade Item Number - the product number. This is the primary key of almost every GS1 code: it identifies the article, not the individual item. |
| (02) | CONTENT check digit | Numeric | 14 <GS> | GTIN of the trade items contained in a logistics unit. Used together with AI (37) to say what is inside a carton or pallet. |
| (03) | MTO GTIN check digit | Numeric | 14 <GS> | GTIN of a made-to-order trade item. Identifies a product that is configured per order rather than stocked. |
| (10) | BATCH/LOT | Alphanumeric | up to 20 | Batch or lot number. Groups items produced under the same conditions - the key field for recalls and traceability. |

| (16) | SELL BY | Date | 6 <GS> | Sell by date (YYMMDD) - the last day the retailer should offer the item. |
| (17) | USE BY or EXPIRY | Date | 6 <GS> | Expiration date (YYMMDD). Safety-relevant: after this date the product must not be used or sold. |
| (20) | VARIANT | Numeric | 2 <GS> | Internal product variant, two digits. Distinguishes variants that do not warrant their own GTIN. |
| (21) | SERIAL | Alphanumeric | up to 20 | Serial number. Together with the GTIN it identifies one individual item - the basis for unit-level traceability. |
| (22) | CPV | Alphanumeric | up to 20 | Consumer product variant. Distinguishes variants relevant at the point of sale without a new GTIN. |
| (235) | TPX | Alphanumeric | up to 28 | Third party controlled, serialised extension of the GTIN (TPX). Used where an external party assigns the serial part. |

How to read this table
Length is the number of characters; “up to n” means variable length, “n+” means an optional part may follow. Identifiers shown as a range (for example 3100-3105) encode decimal places in the last digit: (3103) 001250 is 1.250 kg. Elements marked <GS> are variable length and must be closed with a separator when something follows them - that single rule is what most broken GS1 codes get wrong.
